DNR Awards Brownfields Grant To City Of Bloomer

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) today announced the site of a former agricultural cooperative on the north side of the City of Bloomer is on its way to being cleaned up with help from a grant from the department.

The financial award is from the DNR’s Wisconsin Assessment Monies program, which provides contractor services worth up to $35,000 for eligible sites. The DNR awarded the grant to the city of Bloomer for a property that local officials say may be in a position for redevelopment once the environmental contamination at the property is better defined.

“Local officials will have the opportunity to market this property—located in an established industrial park—once they get more information regarding the contamination,” said Jodie Peotter, DNR Brownfields, Outreach and Policy Section Chief, Remediation and Redevelopment Program. “The city has already seen interest in the property.”

DNR’s RR Program Hiring South Central Region Program Supervisor

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is hiring a Regional Program Supervisor within the Remediation and Redevelopment (RR) Program.

This position is located in the South Central Region office, located at the DNR’s Fitchburg Service Station. The deadline to apply is July 19, 2021.

This person hired for this position will administer and manage the RR Program in the South Central Region. Duties will include developing specific work plans with detailed goals and objectives for program staff, monitoring and enforcing compliance with relevant statutes and other policies and coordinating with internal and external stakeholders to support program objectives. The person hired for this position will also supervise a team of permanent staff and limited term employment (LTE) staff within the program.

NR 700 Reporting Due July 30, 2021

Semi-annual reporting for the period of January 1, 2021 to June 30, 2021 is due by July 30, 2021. Semi-annual reporting is required of responsible parties (RPs) for all open sites, including those sites the DNR formerly classified as “conditionally closed” in the BRRTS online database. Consultants may submit these reports on behalf of RPs.

An email from the DNR with a unique Report Identification (ID) number was sent during the first week of July 2021 to contacts of sites listed in the database. If you did not receive an email, you can request a Report ID number by submitting the Report ID Request Form. The Report ID number uniquely identifies the activity for which you wish to report, the reporting period, and verifies the person using the Report ID is authorized to submit the report. Public Input Opportunity Ends Soon for Publication RR-0115, Guidance: Contaminated Sediment Fact Sheet

The public comment period ends next week on July 1, 2021, for the publication RR-0115, Guidance: Contaminated Sediment Fact Sheet.

The fact sheet is a brief outline of the typical approaches that are used to navigate through Wisconsin Statutes (Wis. Stat.) ch. 292 and Wisconsin Administrative Code(Wis. Admin. Code) chs. NR 700 to 799 with respect to the investigation and remediation of contaminated sediment.

Updates From DHS Clarify Hazard Index Reporting

On June 7, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) provided the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) with an updated letter on the utilization of the hazard index (HI) approach to assess the cumulative risk of PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances).

This updated letter clarifies recommendations provided to the DNR in November 2020, making clear that the hazard index should be reported to one decimal place (examples are provided in the memo). No other changes to the DHS recommended approach were made.

Now Available: Publication RR-649, Guidance for Documenting the Investigation of Human-made Preferential Pathways Including Utility Corridors

Following a public comment period and consideration of the comments received, the publication RR-649, Guidance for Documenting the Investigation of Human-made Preferential Pathways Including Utility Corridors, is now posted and available online.

RR-649, formerly titled Guidance for Investigating Utilities, focused on investigating the migration of contamination in media along the exterior of utility corridors within the surrounding utility bedding. Current research indicates that contamination and vapors may migrate within utilities as well as other preferential pathways and the updated version of RR-649 reflects this new understanding. Reminder: Issues & Trends Webinar on June 15, 2021: 1,4-Dioxane – A Contaminant of Emerging Concern

The Remediation and Redevelopment (RR) Program reminds you that the next webinar in the Issues & Trends series will take place on Tuesday, June 15, 2021, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.

The scheduled presentation is: 1,4-Dioxane – A Contaminant of Emerging Concern.

This presentation will provide an overview of 1,4-dioxane. RR Program engineer Angela Carey will review considerations for site investigation scoping, sampling and analysis and selection of remedial options. In addition, information regarding proposed updates to 1,4-dioxane groundwater quality standards in NR 140 will be provided.
